Noelani's Topic and Foci

Topic: Novels to Film Adaptations

Foci 1: How directors depict the characters from the novel onto the big screen. I would use The Maze Runner by James Dashner and the film to depict this and The Hunger Games by Susanne Collins along with the portions of the film. The Maze Runner is about the society burned by sun flares and how their government is trying to draw out those that are immune to the diseases that come from these flares. The Hunger Games is about a dystopian society in which their are twelve districts that each end contenders to fight a battle to the death in order to win a better life. Each of these novels shows the characters personalities and their physical appearance and how they interact with other characters.

Foci 2: Comparing the settings between the two novels and their films. Which would include the way the author paints the picture of the world and the way the director does. This could be through setting and how the world is constructed. Using the two novels and films could also compare how directors differ from each other in their imagination of the worlds from the novels.

Comments

  1. 1. For foci 2, could time difference between when the book was written and when the film was made influence the settings?
    2. Besides The Maze Runner and The Hunger Games, are there any other novels turned films that you are considering? I only ask because I don't know how much criticism there will be about the characters in these two films compared to their novels.
    3. Is there a particular audience that the novel appeals to than the movie? Do the novels and their films target the same audience? (For both foci)

I like that in your 2nd foci you want to compare the settings of the novels to their films because that is a major feature of a story. I really like how you considered the fact that directors may have room for imagination. I think if you wanted to, you could combine your foci and explore more features that noticeably make the film different from the novel it originated from. As for your choices of novels, I think you could also use One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest too.
